Forest School

Each of our nurseries incorporates ‘Forest School’ activities into our Pre School curriculum. We were the first on the Wirral to embrace this innovative approach to outdoor play.

The philosophy of Forest school is to: “Encourage and inspire individuals through outdoor experiences. This helps to develop a good understanding of the world around them using emotions, imaginations and senses.”

We use local woodland in addition to our own outdoor areas to promote Forest School, providing activities such as mini beast hunts, picture making with natural materials, and leaf matching.  The children become aware of the sounds and smells associated with woodland, learning to respect and appreciate their natural surroundings. Since launching this initiative we have seen usually quiet children building their self-confidence and independence.

The programme runs throughout the year, for about 36 weeks, visiting the woods in all weathers (except for high winds). Children use full sized tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become self-motivated.

Forest Schools aim to develop:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Regulation
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Empathy
  • Good social communication skills
  • Independence
  • A positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence
